There are lots of myths surrounding the construction industry and construction workers – here are some of them debunked:
- It’s not a line of career for women – while this was true in the past, more and more women today choose careers in construction. Women have proved that their endurance, their agility, their dexterity, their problem-solving and stress management skills are at least as good as men’s and they use resourcefulness to make up for what they might lack in physical strength;
- Only people who did not do well in school choose careers in construction – good construction workers need extensive knowledge of mathematics, physics and chemistry, they need to know the tools and machines used during their work and all this knowledge cannot be mastered by people who had a poor performance at school;
- Construction is for people who want to use their physical strength and not their brains – construction work at any level requires continuous decision making, so workers are faced with physical as well as with intellectual challenges all the time;
- People who work in construction get stuck in the position they were hired for – there is lots of mobility in the construction industry, lots of opportunities for advancement.
