March Madness: Leveling the Playing Field

If you are not a basketball fan or even a fan of sports in general, the NCAA March Madness basketball tournament still takes precedence during the month of March. Bars are lined with basketball memorabilia, friends and family compete with bracket predictions, and basketball games dominate the TV and mobile streaming airwaves during March.

Over 300 teams that compete in the NCAA’s Division 1 are narrowed down to 68 teams, forming a bracket. These brackets pit first place teams against last-rated teams in a single-elimination style tournament. People scurry to fill out their brackets before the tournament starts to guess who will make it to the final championship game.

Regardless of previous status or rankings during the regular basketball season, all teams are on a level playing field entering March Madness. Underdog teams have the chance to knock out highly-rated favorites and become heroes.

Although March is the only time a level-playing field is available for these individuals, the Construction Careers Now (CCN) program seeks to offer a level-playing field for those who want to enter a career in construction. CCN offered its first four-week program in September of 2016 and has now extended its classes through September of 2017.

With no cost to participants and no prior experience required, CCN levels the playing field for both men and women, regardless of socio-economic background, to enter the construction industry. CCN graduates complete a four-week program to obtain a 10-hour OSHA certificate, exposure to key trades and the ability to be hired by local construction contractors during the hiring fair that is included in every program.
