As we celebrate Mother’s Day on May 14th, we are reminded of all the hard work and sacrifices our mothers have made for us, to ensure that we had a roof over our heads, food on the table and words of encouragement. In an era where dual-income households are becoming the norm, our mothers often take on two jobs – one in the workforce for her employer and one at home as the jack of all trades for her family.
While construction is not typically a career associated with women, the industry is seeing more moms entering the construction industry. In Colorado, where 30,000 construction employees are needed within the next seven years, women should encompass a sizable percentage of that employment opportunity. Currently, the Denver-metro area includes a 9.2% employment of women in the construction industry. In an effort to offer more women construction employment opportunities, the Construction Careers Now program has graduated 15% of women in the last seven months.
Most women will say that they have no prior experience in construction and do not have a means to learn about the industry. Construction Careers Now is a program designed for individuals with no prior construction experience and is available at no cost to participants. During 16 classes over a four-week period, participants can learn the basics of construction and earn a 10-hour OSHA card for construction safety. With a hiring fair included in every cycle of the program, participants are able to meet face to face with real contractors to find out for themselves about all of the benefits available in a career in construction.
