Power of First Impressions

As the over 45 participants in Construction Careers Now’s May program prepare for this week’s hiring fair, where 20 local construction contractors will gather eager to hire a new workforce, we are reminded of the power of first impressions.

In a study conducted by Davitt Corporate Psychology, first impressions are formed within 7 to 17 seconds for meeting someone. In addition, in a survey of over 2,000 managers, 33% claimed to know whether or not they would hire someone within 90 seconds. When speaking with people, individuals remember 80% of the oral and visual information, e.g. your appearance and body language, you give them.

In order to prepare our CCN participants for the hiring fair, our recruiters/mentors have been providing them information about the companies exhibiting at the hiring fair so they can be confident knowing who they can speak with at the hiring fair. Our recruiters/mentors have also been coaching our CCN participants in the past three weeks – stopping by the classes to check in with participants and offering best practices when speaking with potential employers.

The success of the CCN program lies within the ability of these participants to start a new career in construction. Thus far, out of 226 completers of the CCN program from September, October and November of 2016 and January and February of 2017,

• 104 were hired – 46%

• 24 entered continuing education or received a wage increase in current job – 10.62%

• Combined, 128 are pursuing the industry and have improved their quality of life – 56.64%

We look forward to hearing back from our April and May participants to find out how they were able to make good first impressions on their employers and start a new career in construction.
