Although most jobs in construction aren’t considered as high paying as other industries, the average annual income that construction workers earn had already exceeded $42,000 in 2015. Two years later, the job market continues to grow, and by 2024 it is expected that 700,000 new construction jobs will become available.
1. Construction Equipment Operators
Driving bulldozers around and operating cranes is already a cool job as it is. When you think of the fact that it pays over $43,000 a year, you already have a great candidate for your next career, whether you’re considering attending a vocational school or basic on-site job training.
2. Plumbers and Pipe Fitters
As a plumber you have to be licensed in most states. However, that’s well worth it when you consider the fact that you’ll be earning in excess of $50,000 a year. Also, attending technical school is not your only option, as many talented plumbers and pipe fitters prefer a more hands-on approach through an apprenticeship program.
3. Experienced Electricians
Like plumbers, electricians have to be aware of important standards associated with the projects they work on, so they also have to be licensed. A good electrician will already reach a $25/hour wage, which translates into a median pay per year of more than $52k.
4. Boilermakers
As a boilermaker, you have to know all about assembling, repairing and installing large containers that are normally filled with gases or liquids under high pressure. This job is definitely not a walk in the park, and most boilermakers have to complete formal apprenticeship programs. The remuneration, however, is substantial at over $60,000 per year with hourly wages approaching $30/hour.
5. Elevator Installers
Finally, we have the best paid job in the construction industry: elevator installers. This line of work has to do with elevators, moving walkways, escalators and other similar types of systems. Due to the safety consideration of the job, a license is required in 35 states. However, the pay is beyond all other construction jobs, with a median annual income exceeding $80,000.
