Apprenticeships in construction are based on the principle of earning while learning, representing a combination of classroom instruction and paid on-the-job training. They are the first step made by those who want to start a career in this field.
Today, many apprenticeship programs for the many constructions jobs in Colorado are operated by construction companies and other labor groups, who are directly interested in training their future employees and motivating them to work for their teams.
Construction apprenticeships are not a modern invention. Transferring skills to the next generation is a practice started in immemorial times. Let`s just think about the Babylonian Code of Hammurabi, which included information about artisans teaching their craft to young people, four thousand years ago.
In the US, indenture was brought by craft workers from England and other countries, coming to the New World (indenture referred to apprenticeship forms). In those days, apprentices used to be very young (less than 14 years old, in most of the cases), coming from very poor families.
First apprenticeship legislation in the United States was enacted in 1911, in Wisconsin, being followed, in 1937, by The Fitzgerald Act, which promoted standards and programs of apprenticeship, as well as cooperation with State agencies.
The construction apprenticeship system has grown up very much and it keeps growing and changing, following the current social system and demands.
